Staff Correspondent, Chattogram

A police constable was killed in a road accident in Chattogram while attempting to catch a young man suspected of being involved in a robbery. Constable Al Amin Sardar, 25, succumbed to his injuries early Monday (October 5) while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

Al Amin was a member of the Police Order Management (POM) branch of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) and was attached to Kotwali Police Station. He joined the Bangladesh Police in 2022. His family lives in the Uttar Dudkhali area of Madaripur Sadar upazila.

Police sources said the incident occurred around 6:30am on Sunday (October 4) near the Ispahani Checkpost at the Wasa intersection in Chattogram city. Al Amin and other members of the police were carrying out their regular duties at the checkpoint when they noticed three young men acting suspiciously.

Police officers reportedly asked the group to stop for questioning. One of the youths allegedly attempted to escape after noticing the police presence. Officers immediately moved to intercept him, while Al Amin pursued the suspect on a motorcycle.

During the chase, the motorcycle reached an area near Jamiatul Falah Mosque. At that point, a bus approaching from behind collided with the motorcycle. Al Amin was thrown off the motorcycle and suffered critical injuries.

Other police personnel and people nearby rushed to his aid and took him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Doctors initially provided treatment in the hospital, but as his condition worsened, he was transferred to the ICU.

Despite efforts by doctors, Al Amin died in the early hours of Monday after spending nearly a day under medical care.

Police later located and stopped the bus involved in the crash with assistance from local residents. Officers arrested the bus driver, identified as Mosharraf, 38, and his assistant, Joy Das, 30. The vehicle was taken into police custody.

A case has been filed against the two men under the Road Transport Act, according to police. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the collision and gathering evidence to determine how the accident occurred.

Police are also investigating the circumstances involving the young men whom officers had attempted to stop before the accident. Authorities said information is being collected to determine whether they were connected to any robbery or other criminal activity.

The death of the young constable has caused grief among members of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police. Colleagues described Al Amin as a disciplined and committed member of the force who was carrying out his responsibilities when the accident occurred.

CMP sources said the required procedures regarding the deceased officer had been completed. His body was subsequently transported to his family home in Madaripur, where arrangements were made for his funeral and burial.

Police have intensified patrols and checkpoint operations in different parts of Chattogram city in recent times as part of efforts to prevent robbery and other criminal activities. The death of Al Amin during an operation has drawn renewed attention to the dangers faced by police personnel while performing duties on busy city roads.

Authorities have urged residents to inform law enforcement agencies if they observe suspicious activities instead of attempting to confront suspected criminals themselves. Police have also stressed the need for drivers and other road users to follow traffic regulations and exercise caution on city roads.

Investigators said the incident would be examined thoroughly and that appropriate legal action would be taken against anyone found responsible.
