Important Discussions on Global Crises at the United Nations General Assembly.

By Staff Reporter

The high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly has begun at the UN Headquarters in New York, bringing together heads of state and government, ministers and senior representatives from countries around the world. Major global issues, including war and peace, climate change, economic inequality, sustainable development, artificial intelligence and international cooperation, are receiving significant attention during this year’s session.

According to the UN schedule, the general debate is being held from September 22 to 26. The General Assembly is scheduled to resume its activities on September 28. Bangladesh’s Khalilur Rahman is serving as President of the 81st session of the General Assembly. The central theme of this session focuses on rebuilding mutual trust, responding effectively to global changes and creating a more effective United Nations system for all.

In his opening remarks, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted several major challenges facing the world today. He identified wars and conflicts, inequality, climate change and the rapid development of artificial intelligence as major challenges for the future. At the same time, he stressed the need to strengthen international cooperation to overcome growing divisions and mistrust around the world.

A high-level meeting on climate change and a just transition is scheduled for September 23. Representatives from developed and developing countries, as well as climate-vulnerable nations and major energy producers and consumers, are expected to participate. A decade after the adoption of the Paris Climate Agreement, the world is facing new realities in addressing the climate crisis. As a result, finding a balance among energy security, economic growth and environmental protection has emerged as an important issue.

Increasing international assistance for countries most vulnerable to climate change is also part of the discussions. Rising sea levels, extreme weather events and environmental changes are affecting many countries, particularly vulnerable communities. Strengthening their capacity and finding long-term solutions to climate-related challenges are receiving particular attention at the meetings.

On the same day, a high-level discussion on the right to development is also being held. The meeting marks the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development and focuses on human dignity, equality, justice and people’s participation in the development process. Four decades after the declaration was adopted in 1986, participants are discussing how effectively the principles have been implemented and how more inclusive development can be ensured in the future.

Meanwhile, ongoing wars and conflicts around the world have emerged as one of the major issues at this year’s General Assembly. World leaders are presenting their positions on security situations in different regions, humanitarian crises and diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving conflicts.

During the September 22 session, US President Donald Trump outlined his administration’s position on Iran. According to a Reuters report, he referred to the possibility of reaching an agreement to end the ongoing conflict with Iran while also warning of tougher measures if no deal is reached. Iran, meanwhile, has continued to deny allegations that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons.

The situation in the Middle East has also received significant attention during the General Assembly. World leaders are discussing the situation in Gaza, the safety of civilians, the humanitarian crisis and prospects for long-term peace. Citing a Reuters report, Singapore’s Straits Times reported that French President Emmanuel Macron expressed a position on Gaza that differed from that of US President Donald Trump in his address to the United Nations. The development has highlighted differences among countries over how to address the Middle East crisis.

A special meeting on rising sea levels is scheduled for September 24. According to the United Nations, rising sea levels are creating an increasing threat to small island states and low-lying coastal regions. Therefore, the protection of vulnerable populations, strengthening infrastructure, climate adaptation and international cooperation are expected to receive particular attention at the meeting.

Lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and preparations for future pandemics are also important issues on the agenda. A high-level meeting on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response is scheduled for September 25. Discussions will focus on how national, regional and international capacity can be strengthened to ensure rapid and coordinated responses if a new pandemic emerges.

The rapid development of artificial intelligence has also received special attention at the UN. While AI is creating new opportunities in education, healthcare, research, business and communication, concerns are growing over misinformation, privacy, security and the misuse of technology. Therefore, the need to ensure that the benefits of AI are accessible to all while developing effective international policies and cooperation to manage its risks has emerged as an important issue.

The General Assembly is also significant for Bangladesh. This is because Bangladesh’s Khalilur Rahman is serving as President of the 81st session of the General Assembly. Representatives from all 193 UN member states are participating in discussions on global challenges and opportunities under his presidency. As a result, Bangladesh’s role has become particularly visible during this important period of international diplomacy.

The remaining days of the high-level week are also expected to feature discussions on climate change, rising sea levels, pandemic preparedness, human rights, inequality, development, and international peace and security. According to the UN schedule, a high-level meeting marking the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action against racism is scheduled for September 28. A special meeting marking the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is scheduled for September 29.

Overall, multiple global crises have simultaneously emerged at the center of discussions during the 2026 high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly. The importance of international cooperation in finding solutions to wars and conflicts, climate change, economic inequality, development, pandemic preparedness and artificial intelligence has once again come to the forefront.

The international community will now be closely watching the outcomes of speeches by world leaders, bilateral meetings and various discussions, as the decisions and initiatives emerging from the session could have a significant impact on future international diplomacy and policymaking.
