National Safe Roads Day 2026 is being observed today, Thursday, with the aim of reducing road accidents and fatalities, raising public awareness, and ensuring road safety. This year's theme is **“Safe Roads, Prosperous Country—Bangladesh First.”** The theme set by the Road Transport and Highways Division highlights the importance of building a safer road transport system.

Road accidents remain a major challenge to public safety in Bangladesh. Effective measures are needed to ensure the safety of drivers, passengers, pedestrians, students, and other road users. On this occasion, emphasis is being placed on obeying traffic laws, driving responsibly, and strengthening coordination among relevant agencies.

According to a report by the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), calls have been made to reduce road accidents through the strict enforcement of traffic laws, ensuring road safety, and strengthening coordinated efforts among relevant institutions. Road safety is being recognized as an important component of the country's overall development.

Drivers have a crucial role to play in preventing road accidents. Overspeeding, dangerous overtaking, disobeying traffic signals, and careless driving can increase the risk of accidents. Therefore, it is essential to maintain the prescribed speed limits, follow traffic signals, and remain attentive while driving.

At the same time, ensuring vehicle fitness, providing proper training to drivers, and paying attention to their physical fitness and eyesight are also necessary. Identifying vision problems among drivers and taking appropriate measures can play an important role in improving road safety.

Ensuring pedestrian safety is another essential requirement for building safer roads. Necessary measures include keeping footpaths free from encroachment, providing safe road-crossing facilities, installing adequate streetlights, and controlling vehicle speeds near educational institutions, hospitals, and residential areas. Road infrastructure should be developed with particular consideration for the safe mobility of children, older people, and persons with disabilities.

On the occasion of National Safe Roads Day 2026, the effective implementation of road safety laws and policies is also receiving attention. According to a BSS report, the government has prepared a draft of the Road Safety Act, 2026. The proposed legislation includes several provisions, including emergency medical treatment for accident victims, legal protection for people who assist accident victims, and a demerit-point system for traffic law violations. However, the implementation of these proposals will depend on the relevant legislative and approval processes.

Enacting laws alone is not enough to ensure road safety. Effective enforcement, regular monitoring, and increased public awareness are also necessary. In this regard, the Road Transport and Highways Division, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), law enforcement agencies, transport owners' and workers' organizations, drivers, and the general public all have important roles to play.

To reduce the risk of road accidents, accident-prone locations need to be identified and improved. Road design and infrastructure safety must be ensured, and arrangements for providing emergency medical services promptly after accidents should be strengthened. In addition, drivers' working hours and rest periods must be taken into account, while safety regulations for passenger transport should be properly followed.

The central message of National Safe Roads Day is that ensuring road safety is not the responsibility of any single individual or institution. Drivers, passengers, pedestrians, transport workers, and public and private organizations must all fulfil their respective responsibilities.

Through greater awareness, proper enforcement of the law, and the development of safer road infrastructure, it is possible to reduce the risk of accidents and fatalities. Therefore, let us all pledge to put the theme of the day into practice, ensure safer journeys, and contribute to building a prosperous Bangladesh.
