The Department of Environment has demolished the chimney and kiln of an illegal brick kiln in Betagi Union of Rangunia Upazila, Chattogram, as part of an enforcement drive against unauthorized brick manufacturing. In a separate action during the same operation, another brick kiln was fined Tk 500,000 for violating environmental clearance requirements and legal regulations.
The measures were taken on Thursday (October 29) during a day-long coordinated eviction drive and mobile court operation in the Baniakhola area of Ward No. 7, Betagi Union, Rangunia.
According to the Department of Environment, the operation was conducted against two brick kilns over alleged violations of various provisions of the Brick Manufacturing and Kiln Establishment (Control) Act, 2013 (amended in 2019), and the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Act, 1995 (amended in 2010). The drive aimed to protect the environment and public interest while preventing illegal brick production.
The operation was led by Md. Rezwan-ul-Islam, Executive Magistrate of the Department of Environment's headquarters. During the drive, immediate action was taken against brick kiln operations found to be violating the law.
As part of the operation, the chimney and kiln of an illegal brick manufacturing facility named M/s Khaja Ajmir Bricks Manufacturing (KMR) were completely demolished using an excavator. The demolition effectively rendered the kiln's chimney and production facility unusable.
Meanwhile, M/s Khaja Bricks Manufacturing (KBM), located nearby in the same area, was fined Tk 500,000 for violating environmental clearance requirements and other legal conditions. According to the Department of Environment, the fine imposed through the mobile court was collected immediately.
Among those present during the operation were Md. Mozahidur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Department of Environment's Chattogram District Office; Research Officer Md. Ashraf Uddin; and Data Entry Operator Kazi Iftekhar Uddin. The officials performed various responsibilities to ensure the successful implementation of the drive.
A team from SRB-07 Chattogram, the Ansar Headquarters, and Rangunia Police Station was deployed to maintain law and order and ensure overall security during the operation. In addition, Rangunia Palli Bidyut Samity provided necessary assistance, including disconnecting the electricity supply to the brick kilns. The day-long operation was conducted with the coordinated participation of the relevant agencies.
Md. Mozahidur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Department of Environment's Chattogram District Office, said that a zero-tolerance policy was being followed against illegal brick kilns to protect the environment and public interest. He also stated that eviction drives and legal action against brick kilns operating in violation of the law would continue regularly.
Such enforcement drives play an important role in protecting environmental balance, controlling air pollution, and ensuring the implementation of existing laws. Brick kiln operators must comply with relevant laws, obtain environmental clearance, and follow all prescribed conditions.
Through the operation in Betagi, Rangunia, separate measures were taken against two brick kilns over alleged legal violations. The Department of Environment has stated that similar enforcement drives will continue in the future.
