Bangladesh have finished the Asian Games women’s cricket tournament without a medal after suffering a 31-run defeat to Pakistan in the third-place playoff. The loss ended Bangladesh’s hopes of winning a bronze medal, leaving the team in fourth place in the competition.

In the bronze-medal match held on Tuesday, Pakistan scored 145 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 20 overs after being sent in to bat first. In reply, Bangladesh managed 114 runs for seven wickets in their 20 overs. Pakistan therefore secured the bronze medal with a 31-run victory.

The match was Bangladesh women’s cricket team’s final opportunity to win a medal at the Asian Games. After being eliminated from the gold and silver medal race, Bangladesh entered the third-place playoff with the aim of securing a bronze. However, while chasing Pakistan’s target of 146 runs, Bangladesh struggled to find rhythm with the bat from the beginning.

Bangladesh’s batters failed to maintain the required scoring rate, allowing Pakistan to gradually take control of the match. Although the Bangladesh innings continued until the final over, the team remained well short of the target. Bangladesh eventually finished on 114 runs in 20 overs, falling 31 runs short of victory.

The result marks a major departure from Bangladesh women’s cricket team’s recent success at the Asian Games. Bangladesh won silver medals in the 2010 and 2014 editions, reaching the final on both occasions. At the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, Bangladesh also secured a medal by defeating Pakistan in the third-place playoff to win bronze.

Because of that history, supporters had high expectations from the Bangladesh women’s team in this edition as well. However, after suffering a heavy defeat to India in the semifinal, Bangladesh lost to Pakistan in the bronze-medal match and were left without a medal.

Bangladesh had suffered a heavy defeat against India in the semifinal while competing for a place in the final. After losing that match by 114 runs, Bangladesh faced Pakistan in the third-place playoff. Although there were hopes that the team would bounce back against Pakistan after the disappointing performance against India, the expected improvement was not visible in the batting department.

Pakistan scored 145 runs in 20 overs after batting first in the bronze-medal match. Although a target of 146 was not considered impossible in T20 cricket, Bangladesh struggled while chasing the total in a high-pressure medal match. Pakistan’s bowlers continued to take wickets at regular intervals while also restricting Bangladesh’s scoring rate.

At one stage, the required run rate began to rise significantly for Bangladesh. Although some batters remained at the crease, they failed to score quickly enough. As a result, Bangladesh’s chances of making a comeback in the final overs gradually diminished. The innings eventually ended at 114 runs for seven wickets after 20 overs.

The result has once again highlighted areas of concern in Bangladesh’s batting. In particular, the team needs to improve its ability to score quickly while handling pressure in important matches of major tournaments. In modern T20 cricket, simply staying at the crease is not enough; teams also need the ability to play aggressively according to the match situation.

Competition in women’s cricket in Asia is becoming increasingly intense. Teams such as India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are making continuous improvements in their cricket structures and performances. To remain competitive in the region, Bangladesh will also need greater consistency in all three departments—batting, bowling and fielding.

However, it would not be appropriate to judge the entire team solely on the basis of the outcome of a single tournament. The experience gained from the Asian Games can be valuable in future international matches and major competitions. Greater attention may need to be given to decision-making under pressure, run-chasing strategies and strengthening the depth of the batting lineup.

Although Bangladesh women’s cricket team failed to win a medal in this edition, the players gained valuable experience by competing in high-pressure international matches. After winning silver medals in 2010 and 2014 and a bronze medal in 2022, finishing fourth this time will undoubtedly be viewed as a disappointing result compared with expectations.

The 31-run defeat to Pakistan has also provided Bangladesh with an opportunity to identify their weaknesses and work on them. To achieve better results in future major tournaments, the team will need to improve batting consistency, maintain wickets under pressure and develop the ability to accelerate scoring at crucial moments.

Overall, Bangladesh women’s cricket campaign at the Asian Games has ended without a medal. Pakistan scored 145 runs in their 20 overs, while Bangladesh managed 114 runs in reply, resulting in a 31-run defeat. Earlier, Bangladesh had lost to India by a large margin in the semifinal, missing out on a place in the final. The bronze-medal match was therefore their final opportunity to secure a medal, but Bangladesh could not capitalize on it.

The team’s main objective now will be to learn from this setback and move forward. If Bangladesh can maintain greater consistency in international cricket, the women’s team can once again establish itself as a strong contender for medals in future major competitions.
