Former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has reiterated her plan to return to Bangladesh in December. Although she acknowledged the possibility of facing arrest, mistreatment, or even threats to her life upon returning, she indicated that these risks had not changed her decision. However, she did not announce a specific date for her return in her latest remarks.
According to a report published by Indian news outlet Outlook India on October 20, Hasina made these remarks while discussing her plans to return to Bangladesh. Earlier, on October 19, she participated virtually in an event organized in Washington, where she reiterated her position on returning to the country. Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, was also reportedly present at the event.
According to the report, Hasina acknowledged the risks associated with returning to Bangladesh, saying that she could face arrest, mistreatment, or even death. Nevertheless, her remarks indicated that these concerns had not changed her intention to return.
Her statement comes at a time when discussions about her potential return, the political future of the Awami League, and Bangladesh’s evolving political landscape remain ongoing.
Earlier, in an interview with Reuters on July 10 this year, Hasina also expressed her intention to return to Bangladesh around December. She said she planned to return with some senior Awami League leaders and face the legal process in the country. However, she has not confirmed an exact date for her return in her latest remarks either.
Hasina has been living in India since August 2024, when she left Bangladesh following a student-led mass uprising that led to the fall of her government. Her departure marked a major turning point in Bangladesh’s political history. Since then, debates have continued over the Awami League’s political activities, legal cases against party leaders and activists, and the party’s future role in the country’s political landscape.
According to Outlook India, Hasina also expressed gratitude to the Indian government and people for providing her with shelter during her stay in India.
Meanwhile, Hasina was tried in absentia by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal over allegations of crimes against humanity linked to the crackdown during the 2024 uprising. In November 2025, she was sentenced to death in the case. Hasina has denied the allegations and described the proceedings as politically motivated. The case and its legal implications have added further complexity to discussions about her possible return.
Bangladesh has requested that India extradite Hasina. India’s position and the legal process concerning the request remain important issues in relations between the two countries.
Another significant aspect of Hasina’s remarks concerns the political future of the Awami League. She has claimed that party leaders and activists are facing pressure and legal cases. However, such statements should be treated as her claims, and a clear distinction should be maintained between political allegations and independently verified information.
It remains too early to determine how Hasina’s potential return would affect Bangladesh’s political situation. The possibility of her return, the ongoing legal circumstances, and the future of the Awami League’s political activities will depend on developments in the coming months.
Overall, Hasina’s latest remarks reaffirm her previously stated plan to return to Bangladesh in December. However, she has not announced a specific date or provided a detailed schedule for her return. As a result, her potential return is likely to remain a subject of political discussion in Bangladesh.
