Winter is approaching Bangladesh, and the first signs of the changing season are beginning to appear. Light morning fog in the capital and various parts of the country, differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures, and the feeling of cool northern winds all indicate a seasonal transition. With the monsoon having withdrawn and autumn drawing to a close, nature is moving through late autumn toward winter.
According to information attributed to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, gradual changes in the country's weather have been noticeable since the final week of October. Although the sun can still make daytime temperatures feel warm, the air becomes cooler as night falls. Temperatures tend to drop particularly during the late night and early morning hours.
What Is the Current Weather Like?
Most parts of the country are currently experiencing relatively clear and dry weather. If there is no low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, the likelihood of rainfall may remain low. As a result, the difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures can become more noticeable. Meteorologists consider this a normal part of the seasonal transition toward winter.
Light to moderate fog has been observed in some areas in the morning, particularly near rivers and in haor regions. In some places, fog can temporarily disrupt morning traffic. While daytime maximum temperatures may still hover around 30–32 degrees Celsius, minimum temperatures are reported to have fallen to approximately 20–22 degrees Celsius.
When Will the Cold Intensify?
Under normal seasonal patterns, the influence of winter gradually increases in Bangladesh from November onward. The northern regions generally experience colder conditions first, followed by the central and southern parts of the country.
Weather experts suggest that temperatures may begin to fall further from the second week of November. The cold is usually most pronounced in December and January. The extent of fog and cold waves this winter will depend on weather systems, including the movement of western disturbances and the flow of cold air from the Himalayan region.
Which Regions Will Experience Winter First?
As in previous years, the northern regions of Bangladesh are expected to experience the early effects of winter. Areas such as Panchagarh, Tetulia, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Dinajpur and Rangpur typically experience colder conditions during the early morning and nighttime hours.
Because these areas are relatively close to the Himalayan region, winter conditions generally arrive earlier and can persist longer than in many other parts of the country.
What Can We Expect From This Year's Winter?
According to the long-range forecast attributed to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, winter conditions may remain within the normal range this year. However, two to three mild to moderate cold waves could occur during the season. The possibility of one or two severe cold waves in the northern and central regions during January cannot be ruled out.
Dense winter fog may also temporarily disrupt air, river and road transportation. The actual intensity and duration of these conditions will depend on weather developments over the coming weeks.
How to Prepare for Winter
The arrival of winter can bring an increase in seasonal illnesses. Children, older adults and people with long-term health conditions may require additional care during this period.
1.Stay Health-Conscious:
Wear warm clothing when going outdoors in the early morning or at night to help protect yourself from the cold. Take appropriate precautions against seasonal illnesses such as colds, coughs and fever. Children should also be kept warm and comfortable.
2.Prepare Warm Clothing:
Take winter clothes out of storage and air them in the sunlight before use. Washing stored clothing before wearing it can help reduce dust and potential allergens.
3.Take Care of Your Skin:
Cold weather can make the skin dry. Use a suitable moisturizer regularly and drink enough water throughout the day.
4.Prepare for Winter Agriculture:
This is an important period for planning and cultivating winter vegetables. Farmers can prepare their land, seeds and other necessary supplies according to local agricultural advice.
The early signs of winter bring a sense of relief from the lingering warmth while also announcing the arrival of a new season. Mist-covered mornings, fresh date palm sap and traditional winter cakes are all part of the seasonal charm that many people in Bangladesh look forward to.
