The official website of Bangladesh Bank has reopened after remaining temporarily closed for nearly three days due to a global cybersecurity alert. The website became operational again at 8:00 am on Sunday. Arif Hossain Khan, spokesperson and Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank, confirmed the development, according to the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
The website was temporarily taken offline on October 22 as a precautionary measure to address potential cybersecurity threats. The decision was made to reduce the risk of possible cyberattacks and ensure the security of the website.
The temporary closure attracted public attention over the past few days, particularly among users who rely on the website to access the central bank’s information, notices, policies, and other official publications.
Bangladesh Bank, the country’s central bank, plays a vital role in formulating monetary policy, supervising the banking sector, managing foreign exchange reserves, and maintaining financial stability. Therefore, keeping its official website accessible is important for public access to information and updates on the country’s financial sector.
Concerns Over PHP Security Vulnerabilities
One of the concerns behind the website’s temporary closure was a global alert regarding security vulnerabilities in PHP, a widely used programming language for developing websites and web-based applications. Concerns emerged that certain vulnerabilities could potentially be exploited to launch cyberattacks. In response, various organizations began reviewing the security of their digital infrastructure.
In this context, Bangladesh Bank’s information technology department worked to ensure the security of its website. Considering the potential risks, the website was temporarily taken offline while the necessary security measures were undertaken.
However, the temporary closure of Bangladesh Bank’s website did not mean that all the central bank’s operations had come to a halt. Earlier reports indicated that connectivity between the central bank and commercial banks remained normal. In other words, the temporary unavailability of the website and the operational activities of banks are two separate matters.
Website Reopening Brings Relief
The reopening of the website on Sunday morning has restored access to Bangladesh Bank’s online information services. Users can access various information and notices published by the central bank through its official website. However, individual pages and online services should be checked to confirm whether all functions are operating normally.
Experts emphasize that regular software updates, security vulnerability assessments, server monitoring, and the examination of suspicious activities are essential to protecting the websites of government and financial institutions. Keeping a website online is not enough; protecting users’ information and an institution’s digital infrastructure is equally important.
The reopening of Bangladesh Bank’s website marks the end of the temporary disruption to its online presence. Nevertheless, strengthening cybersecurity measures and maintaining regular security monitoring remain essential to addressing similar risks in the future.
